GMOs represent nowadays one of the (many) points of friction between the world of science and the environmental world. However, I do not want to discuss the problem of GMOs in general here, but to dwell on a specific point which I find totally unjustified (at least in its deep psychological meaning). It can happen, for example, to read on the labels of meat packages of the food departments of supermarkets the diction \u201cMeat from animals not fed with GMO food\u201d.<\/p>\n

Let’s start by remembering what is meant by the expression \u201cGenetically modified organisms\u201d, GMOs: conventionally, GMOs are defined as all organisms in which genes foreign to their original genetic makeup were introduced via genetic engineering. It would be necessary to make a further distinction between organisms into which a gene from another species has been introduced and those in which a gene of the organism itself has been modified. However, let’s limit ourselves to GMOs of the first type, which are the most controversial in public opinion. What happens when an animal (for example a cow) is raised on GMO corn, an event probably quite common? The cow in question digests corn which usually contains a single \u201cforeign\u201d protein (usually a protein that gives corn resistance against certain types of insects), and the latter is “digested” like all other corn proteins. In the meat of the cow there is no trace of that gene present in the feed. All proteins (and nucleic acids) present in a higher organism are produced by the body itself. Consequence, the meat of the animal grown on GMO feed does not represent any food-related risk.<\/p>\n

            It goes without saying that the meat of a free-range cow, perhaps in the green of a mountain pasture, is certainly better in terms of taste than that of a cow that has been kept throughout its (short) life in an intensively reared stable, but all this has nothing to do with GMOs and with the health of those who eat its meat.<\/p>\n
