An apparently classic detective novel: a researcher of Italian origin working in Oxford is found dead in a room of the guest house of an international research campus located in Grenoble, in southern France.
A locked-room murder, a strange theft possibly connected to the researcher’s death, and the apparent lack of a motive—these are the elements puzzling the young lieutenant of the French police in charge of the investigation.
And then, who are the authors of the strange “epitomes” that punctuate the narrative and provide the reader with details not directly accessible through the story itself?

Only in the final pages does the reader finally encounter a shocking truth that could indirectly concern all of us.
The novel ends with an appendix in which the theory underlying the entire story is briefly discussed, complete with bibliographic references.
